Jeremy ducked as the jug sailed passed his head and landed against the wall behind him, shattering into a hundred pieces.

“JEN! We got that in Spain! What are you doing?!” He tried to keep his calm but it was no use. The multicoloured pottery now covering the living room carpet was a sign that this was not going to be a calm conversation.

“What am I doing? Oh I don’t know Jeremy! Maybe I’m just a little upset that you’ve been hanging out with Stacy. Texting Stacy. Sending things to Stacy.” Jen put a little extra emphasis on that last Stacy just in case Jeremy was missing the point.

“We are just friends, Jen. You knew this when we started dating that Stacy and I were friends. Like from the very first day you knew.”

“That’s great Jeremy. But when that friendship turns into more of a relationship, even though you two both deny it, how do you think I feel?”

“How is it a relationship?”

“Hmm let’s see: you haven’t text me in days. DAYS Jeremy. Are you my boyfriend or not? Like you don’t think about me? How my day has been? Not a single text in,” Jen checks her phone just to make sure she isn’t over exaggerating the issue, “3 days. Now let’s look at your phone,” she picks it up off the table where she put it before throwing the jug from Spain, and opens the chat app, “ooo look, 5 texts to Stacy in the last half hour! You’ve only been here for 45 minutes! Jeremy. What is going on?”

Jeremy falls silent. He doesn’t know where to look.

“Yeah – ok. I text Stacy! You and her have different personalities. I just click differently with her than with you. It’s not a bad thing. It’s not anything!”

“Do you text her every day?”

“How often?”

“I don’t know Jen! Like I say good morning and then we just randomly send things during the day.”

“Every morning you say good morning?”

“Well….yeah…I guess?”

“I need you to leave.”

“JEN! You’re over reacting to this! There is nothing going on between me and Stacy!!”

“Well maybe there should be?! You obviously think about her more than me. You two seem to have a better connection that what we have. Jer – you need to think about this seriously. Like we could be good, but if you can be great with someone else, why aren’t you exploring that? Go. Call me when you’ve thought about this seriously.”

By now Jen was at her apartment door holding it open, using her hand to gesture that Jeremy was to leave. With a heavy sigh, Jeremy picked his coat up from the back of the chair he had placed it on and walked to the door. Instinctively he leaned in to kiss Jen on the cheek. She moved her face to the side.

“Ok…But Jen, I love you. I don’t want this to end. Sending me away won’t change that.”

“It might…”

Jen closed the door to her apartment and bolted it shut. Leaning against the cold metal, she exploded into tears as she sank to the floor. When she had exhausted the emotions through tears, she dried her face with her sleeve and walked to the hall closet to get the vacuum. She had a shattered jug to clean up.
