Little did Nicolette know that when Ken left her apartment that night, it was to be her last time seeing him. They had spent a lovely night in together – they watched tv, they cuddled a little bit, they talked about things together. It was so nice to just hang out instead of having the pressure of a full date. They were perfectly content there in her living room, together, without anyone else around them.

Ken stayed pretty late that night, not wanting to go home. But eventually he had to leave or he was going to be too tired to drive. Even though Nicolette said it was ok to stay over, Ken knew that he didn’t want to cross the boundaries just yet with her. She walked him down to the lobby of the building, got one last kiss, and off he went.

When Nicolette returned to her apartment, she noticed Ken had left his hat on the couch. She text him to let him know that it was there, and he said that he’d get it the next weekend when he saw her. She put it away in the closet so that it wouldn’t get lost.

The next weekend, Ken didn’t come over. They had had a little fight so they were taking some space. The weekend after that, Nicolette was sick. It wasn’t anything serious, but she didn’t want to pass it along.

Week after week, there seemed to be something keeping Ken and Nicolette from each other. Their communication seemed to drop. The interest levels just weren’t there. After a while, a whole day would pass without a single text. It stretched to two, three. Within a month, there was no communication at all.

The relationship had ended and was over without anyone even having to say that it had fizzled out. The only reminder was that hat sitting in Nicolette’s closet. Every time she opened the door it would remind her that she needed to text Ken to pick it up. But later, she was busy just then.

For those of you just stopping by, this post is being written in participation of the A to Z challenge. No Love For Fatties will resume regular posts as of May 1st. Until then, enjoy a new short story every day of the month! If you are stopping by from A to Z, let me know by leaving a comment in the section below!
