Welcome to the Circle

Reality Show GIF by The Circle Netflix (US)

By the time this post is up on my blog, this Netflix show would have been out for like at least a month or more so if you haven’t seen it and don’t want spoilers, buh-bye. Come back when ya ready!

Let me say that I wasn’t going to watch this show. But Paul suggested it and if Paul suggests then I usually at least try it. Except the bachelor/bachelorette. I have never, and will never watch one. No thank you. He has made some good suggestions over the year(s?) that we’ve been blogging buddies so I trust him.

So I started it. It was a sucky weekend here in Toronto and I was staying in for the whole two days, and I needed entertainment!

At first I was all bleh why am I even doing this?! I don’t like reality shows that have no purpose. Like sure America’s Next Top Model you need talent to win! But this? Seems stupid.

But then I started watching it!

And after episode one, I still thought it was stupid!

I had no idea what was going on. Maybe if I wasn’t also texting boys at the same time I would have understood it a little bit better? But that was a very busy “first conversation” weekend for me and I had a lot going on!

BUT THEN!!! After the second episode, I was hooked! I’m glad it was only like 12 episodes because anything longer and I would have stopped watching.

If you haven’t seen it and need to know what it’s all about, here is my version:

8 people are put into an apartment building and aren’t allowed to leave their apartment to talk to each other. They must communicate via social media called “the circle” which is obviously not voice activated like they have you believe but is actually a real person and I am SHOCKED that people actually think it was really voice activated. PLEASE

So they get to play games and every day or so they rank each other on who they like and don’t like and then the top two get to vote someone out. Sometimes they get new players, until they randomly don’t anymore because that’s when the show is starting to wrap up.

You can be yourself OR you can be a catfish (y’all I was catfishing before it even had the name catfishing! Have I told that story? I actually had to go check and I did. Read it here.)

Everyone is trying to kick off the catfish, or find out who is catfishing? Most people who catfish stay as catfishes until they are voted off and then they leave a message and their real person is shown. But one outted herself after like a day cos she felt so bad.

The person everyone likes at the end is the one who wins the money.

Now, what I don’t get is what is the deal around the catfish? There was no bonus for being the catfish and winning, no penalty, nothing! There was no point! Just something stupid.

I still don’t get it. But I can say that the one I wanted to win did win! But he made a romantic connection with someone and then kicked her off the show! They met in his room (cos once you’re kicked off you get to got visit one person) and then they made out a bit. But during the reunion show and finale, he basically ignored her the whole time while she is just like desperately trying to hug him in the middle of him celebrating. It was awkward to watch. But he did say they were going to be going on the date they planned so maybe they did? Who knows.

So bottom line, this was fun to be obsessed with for a weekend while I binged all the episodes, and thank you Paul for allowing me to blow up your instagram messages to freak out over what was happening. But if there is ever another season, I probably won’t watch it.

Have you seen it? What did you think? If not, will you now that you know my opinion? Have I swayed anyone one way or another? Let me know in the comments!

  1. Not my cuppa tea. Although I did used to watch a tv reality show called “The Mole” (which I believe had a few franchises around the world). The contestants work as a group to add money to a kitty that only one of them will win. Among the contestants is one person who has been designated “the Mole” by the producers and is tasked with sabotaging the group’s money-making efforts. His or her identity is unknown until the end of the series, when two genuine contestants take a final quiz in the final episode regarding details of the Mole. At the end of each episode, the contestant who knows the least about who the mole is, as decided by the results of a quiz, is eliminated from the game.

  2. I can’t even be mad that you won’t watch The Bachelor. But I’m glad you gave this show a chance and liked it! You’re on to something…there should be a bigger incentive/prize if the catfish wins the whole thing. As for the voice activated thing – I was convinced there was an intern or someone writing out the messages, but I read that The Circle was a UK show and the creators of that show created the whole platform and it is voice activated. This is why the US version was filmed over there – so they could use the technology and same apartments. That said, I don’t know what to believe.

  3. I might have to give this a go now if you AND Pual suggest it… I just watched Cheer on Netflix and it was pretty good. I mainly watched that one because Ellen Degeneres raved about it and had some of the show’s ‘stars’ on her show.
