George sat anxiously in the waiting room of the hospital. Thankfully, his friend Eric was working that evening and was providing some support for George. Well, it wasn’t really support, more like lame jokes to try to calm him down. This could end up being very painful to watch.
George’s phone finally rang, showing Lindsay’s id. He handed the phone to Eric.
“Linds?! OMG LINDS! It’s about time!! George has been here for an hour! He’s just about to go into x-rays! What’s taking you so long?!”
“OMG OMG Eric, what happened?! I was getting a manicure! I had my phone turned off so I wouldn’t mess up my nails by checking it. Where’s George?! Is he ok?”
“Just get down here. QUICKLY!”
“OK! OMG!! I’ll be there in 10 minutes!”
George sat listening to Eric’s side of the phone call. He hated to do this to Lindsay. He could hear the panic in her voice.
“You’ve got 10 minutes, mate.” Eric said as he handed the phone back to George. “Are you sure you want to do it like this? She might never forgive you.”
“Yeah, I’m sure. We’ve talked about it. She’ll forgive me.”
“Ok, well your room is this way…” Eric gestured down the hall to an empty room.
Lindsay showed up at the hospital in record time. She flew into the emergency room and found Eric waiting for her there.
“Eric, where is he? Is he ok? What happened?!”
“I just got the x-rays and am heading to his room now. Why don’t you come with me? I told the doctor that you’re George’s girlfriend, and even though you’re not technically family, he’s going to let you see the results.”
Lindsay nodded her head, her eyes starting to tear up. This was not how their anniversary was supposed to go. She had gotten dressed before her manicure and felt out-of-place in the hospital.
When they reached the room, the curtain was pulled around George’s bed, Lindsay went to pull it around to take a look at him but Eric stopped her, “He just got to sleep Linds. Let me take a look at the x-rays before we wake him up ok?”
As a lab-tech, Eric knew what he was doing. He put the x-ray into the light box and flipped it on. He took a step back to let Lindsay really take it in. He was amused at how confused she looked – it was a picture of a chest: there was the ribcage, and where the heart would have been, a silhouette of a ring.
Lindsay heard the curtain around George’s bed being pulled back, and she turned around to see what was happening. She was shocked to see her love perfectly fine, on one knee, holding out a ring that matched the shape on the x-ray.
“GEORGE!” She half screamed before clamping her hand over her mouth.
Her tears of sadness instantly turned into tears of joy. He had remembered the dream she had a few weeks ago. She didn’t want to tell him, but apparently she was thrashing around so much in her sleep that she couldn’t talk her way around it. She thought it would have scared him off. But now she knew she had found the most perfect, silly, completely insane, human being in the whole world. And she couldn’t wait to hold this stress over his head for the rest of his life.
