The sun was blazing hot on this particular Australian summer morning, when Rene the kangaroo awoke. She looked around sleepishly, blinking her eyes to try to adjust to the light. Everything seemed to be in a haze because of the heat.
As she began to stir, Rene decided that she needed to find something to eat. Since kangaroos are made to survive in the hot Australian weather, they get lots of water from their food. She went to her favourite patch of grass, that was found under the shade of a lot of trees.
When she arrived, Rene found her two kangaroo friends. Samantha and Rosemaire were already there enjoying the sweet taste of the grass.
“You must have slept late today!” Samantha called out to Rene as she hopped up to join her friends.
“We almost had to come and find you,” Rosemarie managed to get out between mouthfulls of long green blades.
“Yeah…” Rene said lazily. “I just wasn’t ready to face this heat…” She slowly started to munch away beside her friends.
The three friends ate in silence for a while until they all had their fill for the morning.
“Before you arrived, Samantha and I were talking about what we should do today,” Rosemarie said as the three of them lay under the shade of the trees.
“Yeah…it’s too hot to do much, we couldn’t think of anything!” Samantha chimmed in.
Rene thought about all the things she liked to do with her friends. None of them seemed appealing at all in this heat. She knew Samantha was right, it was too hot to do very much.
“Why don’t we just stay here for a little while then?” Rene pondered out loud. “We have the shade of the trees, lots to eat if we’re hungry, and if it cools off later, we can always find something else to do then?”
Samantha and Rosemarie murmmered their agreement to Rene’s plan. They didn’t always have to fill their day with exciting things. Sometimes a relaxing day under the trees was exactly what they needed.
Rene, Samantha, and Rosemarie spent the whole day under those trees. Just talking and relaxing as friends like to do. In the evening, it still hadn’t cooled off and the kangaroos still didn’t have any motivation to do much. They each said their goodbyes and headed off to their own homes, promising to return the next day to the same spot to see what that day would bring.
