Any book that has the sentence “Screw you Neil DeGrasse Tyson” over Pluto not being a planet anymore is a book I need to be reading.
So I have finished another book! I told you this was going to be a big thing for a little while. I’m in a reading phase. February is great for a reading phase.
Last Friday, I finished Scrappy Little Nobody by Anna Kendrick.

I’m in the middle of a biography phase for reading. And like I said for Modern Romance, I was a little let down by this book. I think when I go to read celebrity books, I’m always hoping they will be as funny and as engaging as Mindy Kaling’s books. I love them. I guess it’s not fair that I hold all other celebrity memoirs up to that standard, but for someone like Anna Kendrick, I was ready for some laughs!
I chuckled a little bit. But not a full out laugh like Mindy gets.
While I was completely shocked at what I read in Modern Romance, I was almost right on for what I was expecting from this book. I expected a collection of short essays, like Mindy, about Anna’s life, like Mindy, told in a funny and interesting way, like Mindy. It was like 75% there.
This book is basically Anna’s journey to where she is now. It’s written in what I can assume is her speaking voice. Which I think is a great asset for an author. My best friend will sometimes read my blog and she always says that I write almost exactly how I would speak and that’s comforting to her. I think the same about this book. From her movies and interviews and things, I felt like I could have just been having a conversation with Anna instead of reading her book.
I read this over the course of a weekend actually. Like Friday-Sunday. But I was a little letdown. It wasn’t as funny as I was expecting, and what Anna writes about was more into her personal life than I was expecting. She really lets us in. Like really in lol.
All that aside, I almost stopped reading the book about halfway through. I was kind of getting tired of how she was writing. It was distracting and kind of felt a little “put on” if you know what I mean.
But I decided to stick it out. It’s hard for me to put a book down when I’ve already started it. I can do it, but it has to be really bad for me to do that. This one was only like a little annoying so I kept at it. And I am really glad that I did.
Getting into the later chapters, when Anna talks about her fame and how she was dealing with it, she started to expose a truly deep and private part of her own emotions and that was touching. I’m not sure what it was about it, and I don’t want to give too much away if you haven’t read the book, but something about reading about those experiences made me see her in a different light and view her personality in a different way. She gets really vulnerable in certain places. It was a refreshing change from the start of the book.
3.5/5 stars!
And just if you need an explanation for anything else today:
Doesn’t that stink!? I had the same thing happen when I read Ellen DeGeneres’ book, Seriously… I’m Kidding; it was written exactly like how she speaks, but she/it was trying too hard to be funny and ended up not being that great of a read.
Btw I just ordered my first gel polish kit. I’m gonna give it a go and see what happens. This time last year I was getting my nails done professionally every 2-3 weeks leading up to the wedding and I kind of miss having nice nails. Can’t wait to start playing!

Oh no!! And I’d think Ellen’s book would be great! That sucks!!
And oh my gosh! YAAASSSS! I can’t wait to hear all about your experience! I might do my nails this weekend. I’m not sure yet what I have planned so it might have to wait lol

I think my thing with Anna is that’s how she is all the time – like she doesn’t try to be funny on purpose. I might just love her too much as well LOL. I really loved it myself when I read it and just felt like she was a kindred spirit for me.

I agree, I don’t think she is ever pretending to be someone she’s not, she’s very honest and open like that. I like that about her personality. Im glad you liked it when you read it!

What’s funny is I liked this more than Mindy’s books. I don’t recall laughing out loud over much in Mindy’s books. Maybe I’m remembering wrong? Either way, I like Anna Kendrick so much more after having read her memoir. I enjoyed it!

I am terrible with names so had no idea who Anna Kendrick was and didn’t recognise the photo – but when I googled her I recognised her (she looks so different on the cover)!
