Yesterday was a day of firsts for me and male strangers.
I’m not sure if it’s just because it is finally spring in Toronto (a beautiful 24 degrees, 75 for you Americans, here!) or what, but men decided I needed to pay attention to them yesterday.
The first incident happened when I was walking to work. I normally put in my earbuds and take the long way to work. It’s a seven-minute walk instead of less than 3 and I walk it every time I go to work. Either way I go, long or short, there is a construction site. Houses are popping up in this neighbourhood! Well, yesterday, for the first time in my entire 31 years on this planet, I actually got whistled at and cat-called passing one of the construction sites. In Spanish even! How cliche.
But then, while driving home from karate lessons with two of my four kidlets, I had to stop at the grocery store to pick up some cantaloupe. There I am, standing in line and this older gentleman pushes his cart in front of me. I was just about to throw him some serious side shade when I realized that his daughter was the customer in front of me and he was just trying to get ahead. Yes, he could have said excuse me, or something explaining why he was just pushing a cart in front of me almost running over my toesies, but I’m Canadian so we accept these things with a smile and a small little head nod.
I said an inaudible “hi” and he starts to speak to me.
“I’m a teacher ya know”
“ooo, that’s nice,” placing the cantaloupe onto the belt.
“I was wondering if you could read something for me?” and he hands me a piece of paper. He was old and looked a little confused and out of place, even though he was with his daughter so I took the little piece of paper he offered me.
I look at it and can’t help but smile! He has handed me a riddle to pass my time standing in line. How sweet! The best part of it is that I actually know the answer! Let’s see if you do:
So he gets all excited because I know the answer and then gives me a little explanation for the answer. I try to hand it back to him but he says “show your boyfriend and see if he gets it too.” Now it’s very sweet that this little old man thinks that I have a boyfriend, but I am very much single (possibly not after a set up on Friday but that’s not part of this story) so I am sharing it with all you guys! I said “ooh, I will!” just because I didn’t want to get into how single I am with a strange man while standing in line at the grocery store.
After that, his daughter still hadn’t finished up yet (he was old enough to have a daughter who was probably between 50 and 60, and you could tell that she took care of him and that this was a shopping trip for his things. It was really sweet to see) so he gave me another riddle!
Did you get that one too?
I can only offer you my guess at the answer, which I think is correct because, by the time I finished reading it, it was my turn to pay. I cashed out and grabbed my things, making sure to say “have a good evening!” to the two of them before rushing off to finish my night at work.
Wasn’t that so sweet? Totally reversed the annoyance of earlier in the day.
Are you ready for the answers?!
Okies, so the first one: During the Roman Empire, one of the Emperors decided he wanted to have a month named after him so he added July and August to the calendar. Thus pushing September, October, November, and December up two places and messing up their names.
Second: Michael and Daniel played and won the same number of games because they weren’t playing against each other.
How did you do? Did you get them? Did you cheat and peek at the answers? It’s ok if you did – I won’t judge you hehe.
