Children surprise me

Okies ya’ll, hold onto your tissues because this post is a huge massive gush about my kidlets.

For those of you who are new, I’m a nanny to 4 pretty awesome kids. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th (12, 11, 10, 7). I haven’t even been here a year but I love these kids with all of my heart. I never knew I could love someone so much. Honestly. They fill almost every inch of my heart that isn’t already occupied by my love of hippos and glitter.

My bosses also run a homestay. 9 Asian high school students stay here to go to school and learn English. So I’m kind of a nanny to them as well. I check in on them daily, make sure they get their homework done and offer any help I can with it.

We’ve had a lot of birthdays recently. 3 of the students over 3 weeks. WOW. So we’ve had a lot of birthday parties. The most recent one was for the oldest student who turned 19. 3rd has been doing some model building with this student and has really bonded with him. 3rd is the only boy out of the 4 kids so he really takes to the male homestay students.

While we were doing the presents and stuff, 3rd is off wrapping up something he wanted to give to this particular student. He finally rushes in, a little package all wrapped up with plain white printer paper. As the student takes it and opens it, it was the model transformer that they had built together! And honestly, my heart almost shattered into a thousand pieces!! 3rd had been working on this thing literally since May and this student helped him get it finished and he just gave it to him. It was so sweet.

Last night at work, I had a few moments with 2nd. She was dropped off with her aunt and needed me to come and pick her up. She called the main house but I didn’t hear the phone. Thankfully, her sister was there to answer it and I left immediately to walk over and get her. When I arrived she was doing her homework (awesome) and I took her planner and wrote my cell phone number in it.

2nd: why are you doing that?

Me: If you ever need me, you can call me. I didn’t hear the phone ringing today so if 1st wasn’t there, I wouldn’t have known you needed me. If you *ever* need me, you call me, and I will come and get you.

2nd: any time?

Me: Literally anytime. If you can’t get ahold of your mom or dad, or you are out with friends and can’t get home. Call me. I will get you.

2nd: What if you’re not working?

Me: I’ll come and get you.

2nd: Even if you’re on a date?

Me: I will leave and come and get you. I love you, and I will come and get you. You’re my kids. He’d understand. (secretly thinking that if he didn’t understand that I would drop him instantly – don’t need that type of guy in my life)

Then later that night, as I was leaving, she pulled me into her room for a private conversation – which at first I thought was just going to be something silly but ended up being very serious. But she said that she didn’t feel comfortable talking to anyone else about it. Not even her mom. I told her that I would talk to her mom for her, and I’ve already set a time this afternoon to go and talk to her, but my heart is just overflowing with how much 2nd trusted me with that information.

Bursting with all the feels right now.

    • I know!! Part of me sometimes wants to leave it and maybe try to get back into the teaching world (better pay, stability, retirement options, being able to pay off student debt faster etc etc etc), but I just love these kids WAY. TOO. MUCH. And I love my job and I hated teaching haha
