Through the Looking Glass

I have stepped over onto the other side, and there is no going back.

Today, for the first time ever, I, Giggling Fattie, went to Chuck-E-Cheese.

Sweet baby Jesus, I’m not sure how people can go there all the time! One of the kids I look after got perfect on a dictee test and this was the reward for that. They knew I had never been and this morning when I arrived, I was asked in the sweetest possibly way if I would want to go with them to celebrate doing such a good job. I couldn’t refuse! We were supposed to be there by like 1 but didn’t arrive until after 3 haha. I was supposed to finish work at 3 but I knew that it would break a heart if I didn’t go. So I went and it was both terrifying and kind of fun.

I got to hang out with the youngest child for the whole time, giving the mom some quiet time alone (or as quiet as she could get sitting beside tables of birthday parties). And when we left, I was even given a bag of cotton candy! YUM. Its leechee flavour, kind of weird but also kind of good….

I also received my first pay for being here, and have consulted on Christmas time off which is awesome. I feel bad getting a whole week off when I literally just started. But it’s Christmas and the babysitter will be staying in town and the father also has the whole week off that I will be gone. So it should be ok. I want to do something special for the family but I don’t really know them all that well yet. So it might just end up being some homemade cookies. They have a bag full of sharpie permanent markers, I might go to the dollar store and pick out 6 white mugs and include instructions so they can decorate the mugs, bake them, and then the marker will stay on forever.

That way they will have something to do together over the holidays as a family.

Readers with children: is this a good holiday activity? Or should I just stick to cookies?

    • The girls i think would be totally into it and the mom too. The boy is 9 and i think if his dad did it, he would. Did a little research and there isnt a general consensus on what method works for the mugs so i might just stick to cookies

        • haha I know! I’ve pinned it many times on Pinterest but never took the time to read any of the posts about it. Some say regular sharpies work great, others say only oil-based sharpies (which are super expensive). One blog even did a test where she baked the mugs at different temps and then washed it a bunch to see how the colours changed/chipped off. So I don’t know! haha
