We have all heard the famous saying from Forrest Gump: Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get. It has been used over and over since the movie came out, and as cheesy as it is, it stands strong in the course of time.
I was watching a movie the other day, and I heard this new variation on the sentiment: Life is life a coin. You can spend it on whatever you want, but you can only spend it once.
I think I actually like that version better than Forrest Gump’s. Life may be like a box of chocolates, but if I bite into a piece that I don’t like, I get rid of it. Or I will trade my dad for better tasting ones. There’s not always a choice in life. But life IS like a coin – I can’t spend my life twice. I may have other choices down the road but I will still only spend that coin one time.
I’m finding that it kind of has a little bit of comfort, but then a whole lot of doubt as well. What if I spend my coin on this item but when I get it home, it’s horrible!? Yes I could just throw it away like the chocolate, but I will never ever get that same coin back. Just like my notebook, I wanted one without lines but I bought one with lines. I can never get that money back, it’s gone. But I will make use of the lined book until I get an unlined one. I can trade the book, I can burn it. I can rip out all the pages and make a collage. But I will never, ever get that money back – especially since tonight it literally fell apart…. Apparently the cover didn’t like being attached to the pages. Gah, what a metaphor for my life right now!
MAYBE!!! (Just go with the crazy on this ok?!) JUST MAYBE life is like a box of chocolates that you BUY with a coin? You can only buy one box, and whatever is in that box you have the choice to eat, bite into and throw away, give to friends, freeze and save for later, makes tradesies with that dude across the way – whatever?
Already the second day into 2016 and look at that great epiphany! Probably the only one I will have all year.
